π Happy October! π
Fall is in abundance all around me… and (for the most part) it’s delicious! ππβ¨
As beautiful as fall is, with it comes change. A season rich with symbolism in relation to death, loss, and the inevitable coming to terms with the cycles of existence.
“The only sure things in this world are death and gravity, and autumn is when we’re surrounded by both.”
Fall also represents maturity, ripeness, abundance, prosperity, and celebratory release. The season may be the end of many things but it can also represent the beginning and remind us that death doesn’t always have to leave us sad.
This seems like a good place to say that Rutabaga is no longer with us. I miss his nutty weaselness; chasing me down in my Pleasers and digging all the dirt out of my plants when I’m not looking. π€ͺπ I feel honored to have been his ‘polecat’ mama.
He, and this concept are this month’s inspiration. The Day Of The Dead is a time of celebration, honor, and remembrance towards loved ones who have passed away. As you know, I always try to do something totally out of the box for my Halloween videos. The fun thing about these projects is I never know how they are going to play out. I start by building a loose plan/story and dive in headfirst with no test runs. The downside is in postproduction I see all the little things I wish I would have done differently (worn a black veil, gotten a two-sided bodysuit, worn neck makeup, etc.).
This year’s video isn’t any different – it turned out nothing like I initially envisioned. Project-wise, anything beyond a freestyle never does. If I only produced what I initially envisioned I’d never publish anything. π Add costumes, lighting, backdrops, etc, and you have to be totally open to sliding into the flow of what is or you get stuck real fast. Think quick, adapt to continual change, tap into intuition, work with what you’ve got, and allow the project to create itself through your hands. All art is that way, isn’t it?
Oftentimes when crafting my baskets I get excited to sit down and work on one to ‘see what’s going to happen next’. πππ¨
I couldn’t do much on the pole in this costume so I got creative on the floor.
In loving remembrance of Rutabaga.
To live is to die over and over again. β οΈπΊ
